January 2003

January 2004 saw Spurs give some improved performances, and indeed some better than the whole of 2003. At the time of writing we survive in the FA Cup (perhaps only to enjoy a good day at Old Trafford if we beat City). Our improvement was kicked of by a great hat-trick by Fredi Kanoute before his departure to the African Nations Cup. Fredi also played in the exhilarating Birmingham victory, and the win at Elland Road, but failed to score in these games, and has been overhauled in his absence by Robbie Keane as top league scorer.

Robbie has scored 4 goals this month - two of them penalties - and was an obvious contender for Player of the Month. However, a true cult figure has emerged at last at The Lane, in the shape of Gary Doherty, who has been playing his heart out in place of Dean Richards, and has surely been a big factor in Spurs good run this month, when we were unbeaten till the last day. Gary even scored the goal at the City of Manchester Stadium that gives us the replay on Wednesday night. All hail the "Ginger Pele"! (see the link on the right if you want to buy the T-shirt)

We started in 18th place, but the three successive wins lifted us to 13th by the end of the month, and there does seem to be a margin of comfort between us and the bottom 3 or 4 clubs. Whether we can go in and improve our lot is another question, and the inactivity in the transfer window (apart from Michael Brown) has baffled and upset a lot of fans who wonder when that £15 million is going to be spent.

...and finally - you can compare this month's figures with Last month , and last year (January 2003).

Gary Doherty has suddenly become a cult figure at White Hart Lane, where he has been affectionately dubbed The Ginger Pele! Robbie Keane scored 4 goals in the 6 games played this month, but I'm giving Doherty the Player of the Month tag for his courageous and effective defending
