The run-in begins

The Spurs Odyssey Flag

When we played at Goodison Park in November, it was Antonio Conte’s first league game in charge of Spurs, after a tight midweek 3-2 Europa Conference win over Vitesse. We played out a 0-0 draw against Everton who were then just one place and one point below us in the league table. I felt that Conte was over-cautious in that game. From the outset, his first choice back three (for that is clearly his preferred formation) was Romero, Dier, Davies. That was the last time Conte was able to play Romero for three months and once again he is consistently playing that back three.

Everton were near the start of 13 league games with only one win under Rafa Benitez, who was never a popular appointment with Evertonians. He became even less popular in January when he allowed Lucas Digne’s transfer to Aston Villa after signing defender Vitalii Mykolenko, who arrived from Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine. Benitez also signed Nathan Patterson, an attacking right-back who helped Rangers go unbeaten and win the Scottish Premiership title in his first full season in 2020/21.

Benitez was sacked after defeat to Norwich on 16th January. Big Duncan Ferguson was in charge for a narrow defeat against Steve Gerrard’s Aston Villa before Frank Lampard’s appointment was confirmed on deadline day 31st January. Lampard quickly completed the signings of our own Dele Alli, and Manchester United’s hardly used midfielder Donny van de Beek. Van de Beek was a loan signing, and Everton do not have to pay anything for Dele until he has made more appearances than he can possibly make in the remainder of this season. Dele has yet to make a start for “The Toffees,” not even in Thursday night’s 2-0 FA Cup win over National League side Borehamwood.

Lampard has won three of his six games in charge so far, but only one of those was in the league. That was a 3-0 against Marcelo Bielsa’s ailing Leeds side. Spurs’ record in their last six league games is just one win better than that of Everton, because we had that sensational win against Manchester City at The Etihad. Everton did put up a strong performance against City in their last league game, losing by just one goal. They also received a subsequent apology over an accepted mistake by the officials (specifically VAR Chris Kavanagh) when referee Paul Tierney did not give a penalty for handball by Rodri, and VAR did not suggest the referee re-examine his decision on the pitch-side monitor.

Everton have been in the media spotlight following the merciless attack of Ukraine by Putin’s Russia. Ukrainian nationals Vitalii Mykolenko and Oleksandr Zinchenko were on opposing benches for the Manchester City game, but they embraced before the game, and both shed tears as all those in the stadium showed their respect and unity for Ukraine. Everton have since suspended their relationship with Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov whose sponsorship deals with the club, were worth a combined £20 million per season. Usmanov had been planning to plough further millions into Everton by securing naming rights of their new stadium. He sold his 30 per cent stake in Arsenal in 2018.

Spurs have today (Friday) announced they will be conveying a message of peace ahead of kick-off at Monday’s game. Young people from Haringey Vox will perform ‘One Day’ – a song expressing hope that one day our world will stop fighting and embrace kindness and freedom.

If you look at our Premier League points per game record (above) you will recognise that historically, Everton are one of our favourite opponents. However, we haven’t won any of our last four games, beginning with the depressing home defeat at the beginning of last season. We drew our away game last season, and this season, and lost last year’s FA Cup Fifth Round tie 5-4. It is time to put this brief hiatus to rest, and whilst it will be a difficult game, I am predicting a 3-1 win. Everton are in a precarious position and Spurs are desperate for the points to maintain their hunt for some kind of European place. The run-in begins here!

Around the time of the September 2020 game, Mail on Sunday journalist Oliver Holt wrote a disparaging article on Spurs with reference to the Amazon "All or Nothing" documentary in which he wrote "Instead of closing the gap, it may be that teams like Everton will overtake them." They haven't overtaken us yet. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored Everton’s winner in the 1-0 September 2020 defeat. He went on to score in each of Everton’s first five games and finished the season with 16 league goals. Calvert-Lewin started this season well with goals in Everton’s first three games, two of which were penalties. Calvert-Lewin’s goals have been much-missed this season, and he has played only 8 games. He does have a chance of playing in Monday night’s game. Centre-back Yerry Mina is definitely out for another month.

Everton do have Andros Townsend available, but he has not been a regular starter for Lampard. 21-year-old Anthony Gordon has been impressing this season and will probably start. Whilst it is early for team news, Rodrigo Bentancur is a likely starter, and on the evidence of Tuesday’s cup defeat at Middlesbrough, Harry Winks could do with the break. Lucas Moura is also in the squad and fit to play again. At least Everton do have an FA Cup quarter-final to look forward to, although it seems Spurs would have drawn Chelsea and would have suffered another inevitable defeat.

Did you know? (1) - Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall played his last game for "The Toffees" against Spurs at Goodison Park on 29th November 1997. It was Neville's 750th senior game. However, it was not a happy occasion for Everton as Christian Gross's Spurs side won 2-0. Gross's last game with Spurs was at Goodison the following season when we won again, this time 1-0.

Did you know? (2) - our last SKY Monday night football game was on October 26th, 2020 when we beat Burnley away 1-0. We did play an FA Cup game last year in January on a Monday. That game was covered by BT SPORT.

We've got Stuart Attwell in charge again. His last Spurs game was only a month ago when we beat Brighton in the FA Cup. Although this will be only the eighteenth game in charge of Spurs for this referee, Mr Attwell appears second in a list of referees for Spurs games which I began collating in January 2010. Born in Nuneaton and now 39 years old, Mr Attwell has a respectable average in our surveys (5.78). This will be his fourth Spurs game of the season. Mr. Attwell officiated the recent Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.
