The battle for a top-four place continues

The view from high in the Putney Road stand

Both Fulham and Tottenham would love to have been involved in this weekend's FA Cup quarter-finals, but in a curtailed list of Premier League games this is one of the big matches with regard to the battle for a top four place. Spurs can take the initiative with a win and would claim fourth place before Villa's Sunday trip to The London Stadium, but Saturday tea-time's London Derby game (SKY 5.30PM) will be tricky.

Fulham had a great spell in late November and early December last year, beating Wolves 3-2 at home, before losing 4-3 at Liverpool, and beating both Nottingham Forest and West Ham 5-0 at home.

Thus Fulham scored three or more goals in four consecutive games in the top division for the first time since October 1961 in League Division One, and won consecutive games in the Premier League by a 5-0 scoreline. They won three consecutive home games in the Premier League for the first time since September 2012.

Following that spell, Fulham had a run of 9 League games with only two wins, but they recently had a super 2-1 away win at Old Trafford and convincingly beat Brighton 3-0 at home. Although Marco Silva has yet to win a Premier League game against Spurs in eight attempts, his Fulham side is not to be underestimated. They've won 6 of their last 9 home games in the Premier League.

Fulham's 22-year-old Brazilian striker Rodrigo Muniz (signed from Flamengo in August 2021) has been in good form recently, scoring 5 goals in his last 6 league games, two of which came against Bournemouth.

Former Spurs loanee Vinicius has been loaned by Fulham to Galatasaray since February where he has made just one start. Raul Jimenez has been out with a hamstring injury, but could be fit to face Spurs. I would suggest he will be on the bench if deemed fit.

Fulham signed Chelsea striker Armando Broja on loan on deadline day for the rest of the season, but he has yet to score since his two for Chelsea in 19 appearances this season.

Spurs have won each of their last seven away Premier League games against Fulham, their joint longest away winning run against a specific opponent in their top-flight history (also seven successive wins on the road vs Aston Villa on two occasions; 1950-1956 & run between 2012 and 2022).

Spurs have won eight of the nine most recent Premier League meetings, with the exception a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January 2021. Fulham's solitary league win against Tottenham in the past 18 attempts was by 1-0 at White Hart Lane in March 2013. They have failed to score more than once in any of those 18 games.

Spurs have now scored in 39 consecutive Premier League games, extending the club's record.

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that is likely Micky van de Ven will miss Saturday's trip to Fulham. Ange Postecoglou has also confirmed that Richarlison is expected to be back and available for Saturday's trip to Fulham.

Earlier this season we played in the second round of the League Cup at Fulham for the first time in 14 years and lost in a penalty shoot-out. That is one of the reasons we have a 41-game season this year. Our league visit last January was a happier affair when Harry Kane scored the solitary goal and thus equalled Jimmy Greaves' 266-goal record.

James Maddison scored his first home goal for the club when we beat Fulham 2-0 in October. We were top of the league at that time and Ange Postecoglou was on his way to a third consecutive manager of the month award.

This should be an exciting game and I truly think any result is possible. My prediction is for a 2-1 away win! The battle for a top-four place continues, although thanks to West Ham's Europa League win last night, fifth place is now almost certain to earn a Champions League place!

Rob Jones is in charge of a Spurs game for the fourth time this season. We've yet to win a game with this referee in 2023/24.
