Arsenal are sore and it's hurting
Thanks to Chris Fincham for the picture
Arsenal are sore. On Sunday, after we struggled past non-league heroes Tamworth, our nemesis was knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round for the third time in four seasons. Their victors were Manchester United, who sit below us in the league. United had ten men and won the penalty shoot-out. Between them, the two clubs have won the FA Cup 27 times, a record 14 of which have been won by Arsenal. They'll be hurting and desperate to beat us.
Arsenal will be comforted in the knowledge that we haven't managed an away league win here since 2010. We did however manage a 2-2 draw on our last visit, as long ago as September 2023. Our captain Son Heung-min scored both our goals. Ange Postecoglou was on his way to the second of three consecutive manager of the month awards. Spurs had scored two goals in each of his first six league games, and would do so the next week at home to Liverpool. Robbie Williams was singing "I love Big Ange instead". Spurs were in the top four, above Arsenal on goal difference. Happy days indeed.
Arsenal are hurting in other ways. They are missing key players Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus through injury. Jorginho will probably miss the game too. Ben White is another absentee. Arsenal's squad is being tested, but they are second in the league, albeit six points behind hot favourites Liverpool. Two goals dowwn in their League Cup semi-final, the league and Champions League are probably all they have to go for now. They are likely to have a fifth consecutive trophyless season. Spurs know that feeling!
Spurs are still missing a legion of players. The loan of young centre-back Alfie Dorrington to Aberdeen suggests confidence in the return to fitness soon of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies. That time does not appear to be just yet, and it looks like the best available back four (Pedro Porro, Dragusin, Gray and Spence) start again tomorrow (8pm - TNT Sport). Ange has confirmed that Richarlison is available, but Timo Werner has been added to the injury list.
Son hasn't scored in 6 games now. He's had his contract extended, but his form and scoring ability have both suffered of late.
Tomorrow's game comes 4 months to the day after our home defeat in September. You might ask what chance is there for Spurs who have managed just 30 points from their last 27 games and just four points from their last seven league games? Well, this is the NLD, and we all hope for a proper performance and a draw at least.
However, Arsenal have suffered just two Premier League defeats this season. The first was at Bournemouth before lost their next away game at Newcastle. Arsenal lost only three league games in the calendar year of 2024. Despite their injuries, the task is formidable. Three of Arsenal's past four Premier League goals against Tottenham have been from corners.
Spurs lost three consecutive home league games against Arsenal for the first time in 36 years (10 September 1988). We haven't beaten them in any game (5) since Thursday May 12th 2022. That was the last time we played Arsenal in a midweek Premier League game and it was a happy occasion, although this was a home match. Antonio Conte's Spurs had a great end of season run, beat Arsenal 3-0 at home, and snatched their Champions League qualifying place.
When Raheem Sterling replaced Gabriel Martinelli after 80 minutes in September's home game, he became the first Arsenal player to make his senior debut in the North London Derby since Isaiah Rankin in December, 1997. That was a 1-1 draw and Rankin replaced Nicolas Anelka. The game was notable for being the occasion of Jurgen Klinsmann's first game after his return to Spurs in the first of 15 league appearances and 9 goals which saw us to Premier League safety.
That brief appearance was Rankin's solitary first team game for Arsenal. He subsequently played for clubs including Bradford, Barnsley and Brentford. Rankin never played a senior game against Spurs again. Sterling's first senior game against Spurs was for Liverpool at White Hart Lane in November 2012 when Spurs won 2-1. 30-year-old Sterling is on loan from Chelsea and returned from injury in Sunday's cup game. He has made just two league starts and made four appearances off the bench in this season's campaign.
I won't offer a prediction. I just hope for a performance ten times better than that against non-league Tamworth on Sunday. Our referee will be Simon Hooper and this is his 11th game in charge of Spurs. His last game was our 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth last month. Mr. Hooper presided over 4 Arsenal wins in the calendar year of 2024.
Did you know?- George Eastham, who died last month, aged 88, was on Arsenal's books at the time of England's 1966 World Cup win, but signed for Stoke City in August 1966. George Eastham famously scored Stoke's winning goal against Chelsea in the 1972 League Cup Final. That was Stoke's one major trophy success. Their side included World Cup winner Gordon Banks. Eastham had been a non-playing member of the 1966 World Cup squad. Eastham briefly managed Stoke between March 1977 and January 1978. His first (drawn) game in charge was against Arsenal.
