Definitive Days No.8
Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 Tottenham Hotspur 1
25 April 2026
In Roberto De Zerbi's third match in charge, Spurs finally ended their
fifteen game sequence without a league win dating back to December
2025. It was one game less than their record sixteen game run in 1934-35.
A win is a very positive achievement and will hopefully boost the
team's confidence. However it was a struggle to win 1-0 against the
bottom team in the division who were already relegated. Spurs didn't
create a lot of good chances.
This was Spurs fourth game of the season against an opponent starting
the day in the relegation zone of the Premier League and the first
they have won (D2 L1 before today).
During the first half of the season Spurs won seven out of eight
league matches when they scored the first goal. They had failed to do
so on the last five occasions when this happened so today was a
welcome change in trend.
Spurs lost two key players to injury Dominic Solanke (leg) and Xavi
Simons (knee). The latter is a particular concern as there is no
obvious replacement.
Unfortunately West Ham United also beat Everton today and remain two
points above Spurs. The relegation battle is now between these two
teams as Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have opened up a gap above
them. Callum Wilson scored a late time-added-on goal to beat Spurs in
January. He repeated the feat against Everton today.
West Ham control their destiny while Spurs don't. If West Ham match
Spurs in points over the last four games, Spurs will be relegated.
Spurs probably need around eight points from those four games to be safe.
De Zerbi has made significant improvements defensively despite the
absence of Cristian Romero for the remainder of the season.
The area which needs improvement now is in the creation of
goal-scoring chances. We are unlikely to see Kulusevski before the end
of the season. Maddison too is a doubt. If Simons the third creative
source sustained a serious injury today it could seriously affect the
team chances of staying up.
De Zerbi remains very positive about avoiding relegation and we must
hope he can translate his aims into achievement.
