Bournemouth's recent form is worse than ours - but...
Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture.
Spurs travel to the South coast tomorrow for a 7.30pm televised game against a Bournemouth team, whose form is actually worse than ours! However, hope is in short supply for Spurs fans these days and it is hard to be optimistic about our chances of picking off "The Cherries".
Andoni Iraola's side gave us a nasty shock in our third game of the season when a fifth minute Evanilson goal was enough to secure Bournemouth the points. We'd had a good start to the season when we took PSG close in the European super cup before despatching Burnley at home and beating Manchester City in our first away league game.
Xavi Simons was presented to the home crowd before the game, and his services will be much-needed tomorrow night. Xavi has served his three-game suspension after a reckless tackle against Liverpool. Mohammed Kudus is a major doubt for this game, having suffered a thigh injury on Sunday.
The last time we faced a team below us in the league we were embarrassed by a 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest. Bournemouth's last win was 2-0 at home to Forest 13 games ago. Even if they win tomorrow, they'll still be below us in the league table. After that win in late October, "The Cherries" were in second place behind Arsenal, and (believe it or not) we were third!
Bournemouth gave Arsenal a good run for their money on Saturday, when they lost 3-2. Now, they face the true North London side! Antoine Semenyo played the full 90 minutes in that game despite the ongoing will he/won't he go saga regarding a potential transfer to one of the top sides - particularly Man City. Semenyo is Bournemouth's top scorer with 9 league goals and not a few assists as well. He's a vital member of this side.
There have been a few goals in recent games. In December Bournemouth became the first side to score 3 or more goals in three successive top-flight games against Manchester United at Old Trafford. They drew 4-4 in an exciting spectacle for non-partisan viewers.
"The Cherries" lost 4-1 at Brentford and their 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge seems to have been the last straw for Enzo Maresca. Bournemouth have scored in their last five games.
There will be a familiar face in the Vitality Stadium tomorrow as former Spurs keeper Fraser Forster has signed a 6-month contract to back up goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic, due to an injury sustained to number two keeper Will Dennis.
Perhaps Bournemouth have suffered results-wise after the loss of key defenders in the summer transfer window. Dean Huijsen, who went to Real Madrid, scored the only goal of the game in last season's corresponding fixture.
Bournemouth have been missing other players through injury. American international midfielder Tyler Adams, Ryan Christie and Ben Doak have been among their absentees.
As for ex-Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke, Thomas Frank suggests he will not be match-fit before late January.
Bournemouth have now won three of the seven meetings with Tottenham Hotspur since their return to the Premier League in 2022 (lost three).
Having won their first five Premier League home games against Bournemouth (keeping a clean sheet in each of the first four), Tottenham have won just one of their last four against the Cherries (D1 L2), conceding seven goals in the process.
Bournemouth have earned more points in their seven games against Spurs since returning to the Premier League in 2022 (7 - W3 D1 L3) than they did in 10 games in their first stint between 2015 and 2020 (5 - W1 D2 L7).
Both teams have tough all-Premier League FA cup ties at the weekend. Spurs host Aston Villa on Saturday when Bournemouth travel to Newcastle. Premier League points are surely the priority here and I expect a tough game. My silly forecast is for a 2-1 Spurs win!
This will be referee Darren England's first game in charge of Spurs this season. It's his ninth game with us, and we last saw him at Goodison Park last January when we were beaten 3-2.
