Dare to do, do or die, win or bust!
Call it what you will, Spurs are in dire straits and I find our situation more depressing than any I can recall since the conclusion of the 97-98 season before Jurgen Klinsmann led us to a magnificent 6-2 win in our penultimate game at Selhurst Park. That win was against Wimbledon and not the residents Crystal Palace, who we play tomorrow (8pm TNT/Discovery).
There is no talisman to lead us on to Premier League survival this year. Our club captain has let us down badly with his latest (4-match) suspension, which will at least reach conclusion tomorrow. When Cristian Romero returns next Tuesday against Atletico, I am concerned about when his next (2-match) suspension will arrive with his next inevitable 10th Premier League yellow card of the season.
Igor Tudor has yet to convince us that he is the man to save us from arguably the biggest top flight relegation since Manchester United in 1974. He's the first Spurs coach to lose his first two games since Martin Jol in 2004. One of those was also to Arsenal, but at least it was a respectable fighting 5-4. We've already had to face the ignominy of "St. Totteringham's Day" with last weekend's results.
Spurs have now lost four consecutive league games, and our last league win was against tomorrow's opponents by a narrow 1-0 on December 28th. Archie Gray became the youngest Tottenham player to score since Dele Alli's fabulous volley a decade ago. Soon after that win, we inexplicably sold last season's top scorer Brennan Johnson to Palace where he has already made 9 league appearances - three as sub. Johnson was one of the few Spurs players who was not missing games through injury, but because Thomas Frank preferred Mohammed Kudus on the right. Kudus got injured on January 4th and won't be seen for a month yet. Johnson made his full Palace debut on the same day in the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on 4th January, and has yet to score for his new club. He needs "Doctor Tottenham!"
Tudor needs to identify remaining players who will fight for our survival, before they swan off to the World Cup or pastures new which some of them will do - relegation or not.
Bring on the fighters! Dare to do! Do or die! Win or bust! This is one of our few remaining games identified as "winnable". It certainly is a "must win" and if we fail, I can't see a game ahead where I do fancy our chances.
We play Palace at home on tomorrow (Thursday) night in the last of the full midweek programme of Premier League matches. Both sides are free of a weekend fixture thanks to their early exits from the FA Cup. In the case of FA Cup holders Crystal Palace they suffered the biggest upset in the trophy's history when they were knocked out by sixth tier Macclesfield in the Third Round in January!
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi went to Man City in January for £20m, and Oliver Glasner confirmed he will leave the club when his contract expires in June.
Glasner said Guehi's potential move had "zero impact" on his decision to go, "because my decision has already been taken months ago". The Austrian had wanted Guehi to stay until the end of the season. Glasner said he told Palace chairman Steve Parish he would not sign a new contract in October, but the Guehi deal is thought to have been the catalyst for him opting to confirm his planned exit on Friday.
Stories have even emerged about Palace considering replacing Glasner early, due to their recent mixed results, but it looks like he'll see out the season. Having succeeded in their play-off round, like us Palace do have a European round of 16 tie to look forward to. They'll play AEK of Cyprus in the Europa Conference League.
Palace are six points ahead of us, and can feel a little more relaxed about their situation. Their recent results include a narrow away win in the "M23 Derby" and a similar one-goal win at home to Wolves. They gave United a run for their money at Old Trafford on Sunday. Maxence Lacroix scored their opener and later was shown a red card for preventing a goal-scoring opportunity, so will miss this game.
Palace have a few injury issues and will miss Doucoure, Mateta and Nketiah. They did sign a couple of useful forwards in the January window with Evann Guessand joining from Villa and Jorgen Strand Larsen arriving from Wolves in a club-record deal worth up to £48m. Strand Larsen scored 14 goals for Wolves last season, but had only scored one league goal this season before his move. He has already hit the net twice - both in the 3-2 defeat to Burnley. Guessand scored the winner against Wolves and also scored last week in the Europa Conference League.
Spurs are currently without Djed Spence, Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Wilson Odobert because of injury, as well as Romero. Our injury list has certainly been a heavy burden over the last two years. Spence will "hopefully" be back for the trip to Spain on Tuesday.
Statistically, Palace remain one of our favourite Premier League opponents. Indeed, if you look at our record in all league games, you will see that historically, we have been the dominant team. I am hoping for a home win and will predict 2-1!
Did you know? - Spurs assistant coach Matt Wells left Spurs just before Christmas to coach Colorado Rapids in the US Major League. One member of that squad is 30-year-old Rob Holding, who left Crystal Palace last August. Holding was previously on Arsenal's books for seven years between 2016 and 2023, making just 98 Premier League appearances. Holding made no Premier League appearances in two seasons with Palace.
Andy Madley takes charge of Spurs for the third time this season. His last Spurs game was also a London derby - our 0-0 draw at Brentford on New Year's Day.
