Things to get worse before improving?

It came as a surprise to most observers when Spurs made clear on Tuesday that interim coach Igor Tudor would be holding Friday's press conference, and by inference would still be in charge at Anfield (4.30pm Sunday - SKY TV) after our shocking defeat away to Atletico Madrid.
It was no surprise to hear the depressing confirmation that neither captain Cristian Romero, nor Joao Palhinha will be available after their clash of heads in Madrid. The club is following concussion protocols, so I certainly do not expect to see them for the return leg against Atletico. The bigger concern is whether they will be available for next week's crucial clash with fellow relegation strugglers Nottingham Forest.
Even Conor Gallagher has joined our gigantic (13-player) injury list, as he has a fever, but just might be available. Igor Tudor offered one glimmer of good news insofar as Destiny Udogie should be available for the Forest game. We already knew that Micky van de Ven would not be at Anfield, due to his red card last week. His suspension is for one match only. Our centre-back pairing will have to be Dragusin and Danso, neither of whom likes playing on the left. If Tudor insists on three at the back, perhaps Archie Gray will cover. Tudor did confirm that Vicario starts this game. He will surely be wearing the captain's armband.
Whilst the club did not specifically use the "R" (for relegation) word, that is clearly on their mind this week as they announced an extension (to 7th June) of the renewal deadline for season ticket holders. Privately, I hear they will even keep their proposed prices under review while our destiny is unknown. They have to do that.
Spurs are currently enduring mass coverage on the sports pages and podcasts etc. for all the wrong reasons.
By the time we kick off on Sunday, we COULD be in the bottom three. West Ham host Manchester City on Saturday night. Forest are at home to Fulham and play before us on Sunday. After that Forest game, we will have a three week enforced break (internationals and FA Cup quarter-finals), when I am sure the club will be reviewing Igor's continuing employment. Most people feel he should have gone already.
No-one in their right mind expects anything other than a convincing Liverpool win on Sunday. Things are clearly going to get worse before they (hopefully) get better.
We suffered two big defeats at Anfield last season. One was the 4-0 Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat after we had actually taken a one-goal lead in the first leg. The other was last April's 5-1 defeat in the league, which secured the title for "The Reds."
Another memorable Anfield defeat came in the season after our promotion from our one season in the second tier in the last 76 years. That was a 7-0 in our fourth league game of the 78/79 season after the memorable signings of Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Our team included Steve Perryman and Glenn Hoddle. We hadn't yet won a game and sat one place off the bottom of the table. We even lost a two-legged league cup tie to third division Swansea before we managed league wins over Bristol City and Leeds. (That was Bristol City's last season in the top flight)
Liverpool have their own issues as they face a fight to retain Champions League place after a disappointing season defending their second Premier League title. They won't be showing any sympathy for our plight.
Spurs have failed to win 11 successive league games for the first time since October 1975, while it's the first time they've lost five consecutive Premier League matches since November 2004 (run of six).
Spurs are now without a win in their first 11 league games at the start of a year for the first time since 1935 in League Division One (15). We were relegated as the bottom club that year. Our first win came in our 16th league match of the year at home to Blackburn under caretaker manager Wally Hardinge. Our only other win was also at home, when we beat Liverpool 5-1!
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 16 home games against Tottenham in all competitions (W12, D4), winning the last four while scoring four or more goals each time.
Tottenham have won just two of the last 26 Premier League meetings against Liverpool (D6, L18), with both victories coming at home. Our last league win against "The Reds" was in September 2023, when we won 2-1. Our last win at Anfield was 14 years ago in May 2011.
Mohamed Salah has scored 16 goals against Tottenham in all competitions, equalling his record against Manchester United. Salah now has 189 Premier League goals for Liverpool, and has scored 254 club goals in all. When he scored Liverpool's goal in their Premier League defeat at Molineux, it was his first league goal since 1st November.
In our home game this season, Liverpool's Federico Chiesa came on for Jeremie Frimpong (89th minute), who replaced the injured Alexander Isak (60th), who came on for the injured Conor Bradley (half-time): it was the first four-player substitution chain in top-flight history.
An MRI scan showed Isak sustained damage to his ankle and fractured his fibula when his left leg became sandwiched between Van de Ven's legs as the Swede opened the scoring in Liverpool's 2-1 victory. Isak hasn't appeared since.
Rio Ngumoha, aged 17, made his Premier League debut for Liverpool at Newcastle four days before his 17th birthday in August. Born in Newham, Ngumoha scored a sensational winning goal at St. James' Park in the 100th minute!
This could be our last game against Liverpool for a while, so I wanted to include a few general pieces of information:-
We played at Anfield on 30th March 2014 (and lost 4-0). Just over two weeks previously, my good friend Darren Alexander passed away. Before the game, as the "Anfield Anthem" was sung and banners raised, there was, in the bottom corner of The Kop stand a banner with R.I.P Darren Alexander. Darren, as co-chairman of the Spurs Trust, and even before he had that position was known on both sides of Liverpool for his work for genuine fans' causes. The recognition by Liverpool fans was pure class, which I applaud. A lot of our fans were busy giving a rendition of the ancient "Sign on" chant.
Bill Nicholson's final league game in charge of Spurs was a 5-2 defeat at Anfield on 7th September, 1974. Martin Chivers and Steve Perryman scored our goals. These were the last two goals scored for Bill Nicholson, who lost his last game at home to Middlesbrough 4-0 in the League Cup. Ray Kennedy, who had scored Arsenal's winning goal at The Lane in May 1971, was one of Liverpool's scorers.
The first meeting of the clubs was on 13th November, 1909 at White Hart Lane. Spurs won 1-0. Liverpool goalkeeper Sam Hardy was born in Newbold, Chesterfield. (I've lived in Chesterfield since 2008) Hardy's league debut for Chesterfield in 1903 was against Woolwich Arsenal (in Division Two) at Plumstead!
George Sephton retired as "the voice of Anfield" last May after 54 years behind the microphone. Anyone who has visited Anfield during that time will remember George's dulcit tones.
Chris Kavanagh will referee Spurs for the 23rd time having first taken charge of one of our games in September 2018 at Brighton, when we won. Mr. Kavanagh was recently in the news after failing to cope without VAR in the FA Cup at Villa Park in a game against Newcastle. Several glaring mistakes were made and the referee and one of his assistants (not involved in this game) were stood down from the following week's Premier League programme. Mr. Kavanagh has since refereed twice in Europe and two recent Premier League matches. Mr. Kavanagh, who comes from Ashton-under-Lyme has refereed every current team in the Premier League.
