Hoping for a humdinger!
Last week, we played and lost to Chelsea, against whom we have our worst points per game record in the Premier League. This week, we play Manchester United and our record against them since 1992 is only marginally better than that against Chelsea (0.8 points per game compared to 0.67).
Whereas we have now lost five consecutive games to Chelsea (for the third time), we will be looking for a fifth consecutive win against United. Our recent record against United is five wins and two draws in our last seven competitive games. Last season, we beat Man United four times (2x Premier League, 1x League Cup, 1x UEFA Europa League), becoming only the second side to win four times against them in one season along with Everton in 1985-86.
For all their woes of last season and even at the start of this term, United have found good form of late with four wins and a draw in their last six Premier League games. Two of those wins were at home to Chelsea and away to Liverpool. They'll be overtaking us with a win here, and with our home form, Ruben Amorim's team will surely fancy their chances.
However, Spurs' confidence will be high after our 4-0 win on Tuesday against Copenhagen. That was the first time we had scored four goals in a game since we beaat United 4-3 in last December's league cup quarter-final.
One of Spurs' scorers on that day (Son) has left, and our other two scorers (Solanke and Kulusevski) are among our injured list. Jonny Evans scored United's late third goal and has since retired, taking on the role as the head of loans and pathways at Old Trafford.
There was quite a shake-up for United in the summer transfer window. Marcus Rashford has gone on loan to Barcelona. Rasmus Hojlund went to Conte's Napoli, also on loan. Hapless keeper Andre Onana joined Trabzonspor, apparently on a better salary than he received at Old Trafford. Another "outcast" Jadon Sancho is doing okay at Chelsea.
Big signings arrived in the form of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens and forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. The settling in process has been long and hard for these three, but Mbeumo (known well to Thomas Frank, of course) has scored three goals in his last three club games, including an early cracker at Anfield.
Players such as Harry Maguire and Casemiro seem to have won favour again. Bruno Fernandes still captains the side, and tends to play a deeper role currently.
Until they beat Liverpool three weeks ago, United had not won back-to-back league games since May 2024, six months before Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag as head coach.
Back in August, United suffered the embarrassment of penalty shoot-out defeat to fourth tier Grimsby. We suffered a similar defeat (1-0) at the same stage against the same team 20 years ago.
This is only the second time in 35 years United have not qualified for
European football, the previous time being Louis van Gaal's opening season of
2014-15.
Spurs beat United four times last season, for the first time, winning a league double for the first time since the 1989-90 season. United also lost a League Cup tie to Spurs that season (3-0 in October 1989). The fourth win was of course the Europa League Final.
Manchester United were victorious in their first four major European finals between 1968 and 2008 but they have since finished runners-up in four of their last five (2009 and 2011 UEFA Champions League finals, 2021 and 2025 UEFA Europa League finals).
United became the 45th team against whom we have completed a Premier League double. Chelsea are the one remaining existing Premier League side against whom we have failed to achieve the feat.
United suffered their most league defeats in a season (18) since 1973-74, when they were relegated from the top flight.
Team news is in, and Kudus's availability is "touch and go". Otherwise, there is no change to the squad and Thomas Frank's issues include Udogie or Spence, and Muani or Richarlison. We might see the return of Dominic Solanke after the international break. He hasn't played since 23rd August.
Ruben Amorim has won October's manager of the month award and Bryan Mbeumo was player of the month. United will come to Tottenham in good spirits.
Tomorrow's game (12.30 pm - TNT) should be a humdinger. Hopefully we can carrry our form and confidence after the Copenhagen win into this game. A Micky van de Ven winner would be the icing on the cake! I'm going for a 3-1 home win!
Sam Barrott is refereeing Spurs for the fourth time. The last time we saw him m in the middle was for the 6-3 home defeat by Liverpool last December. Mr. Barrott was promoted to the FIFA list of international referees around the same time and has had charge of conference league and under 21 internationals this season. He was fourth official last week for the Chelsea game.
