Grounds for optimism, surely?

Brentford v Spurs, 01.01.26

Thanks to Cassim Patel for this picture

At last, the new Premier League season has arrived, and just as we did three years ago, we commence our league programme at Brentford. Then, on August 13th 2023, Thomas Frank was in charge of Brentford and Ange Postecoglou coached Spurs for his first official game. A lot has happened since!

"Big Ange" departed after our 2025 Europa League win. Frank was his replacement and lasted (too long) till February this year. His replacement Igor Tudor lasted a near disastrous 7 games before our saviour Roberto de Zerbi prevented the ignominy of relegation.

Now Frank will be one of the new pundits on this season's Match of The Day. Postecoglou was (briefly) one of Nottingham Forest's four coaches last season and will now coach Cristiano Ronaldo (and others) in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr.

"RDZ" has been given the full backing of the Lewis siblings' led Tottenham Hotspur board. The early signings of Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, West Ham's Mateus Fernandes and Brighton's Jan Paul Van Hecke excited us. The experience of Liverpool's Andy Robertson, Burnley's Martin Dubravka and Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi has been added to the mix of a squad which will be massively different from last season.

There's a long list of departures. Those of most significance are firstly, last season's club captain Cristian Romero, who went to Atletico Madrid. Djed Spence, who had an excellent World Cup with England, has been sold to Inter. Last season's number one keeper Vicario joins Juventus, ostensibly on loan, but will probably not return. Antonin Kinsky, who performed so well on our De Zerbi led run-in, has become our new number one keeper, although he will keep his (lucky?) number 31.

World Cup winner Pedro Porro was given a hero's welcome on his return to the club only 10 days ago. Whilst he will be our first choice right back, he will not be involved in tomorrow's game. Archie Gray has been our captain for most of our pre season friendlies (in which we were unbeaten) and has often played at right back. He will probably start there tomorrow (5.30pm - SKY).

Roberto has confirmed Micky Van de Ven as our new club captain, but he is not fit to be a part of tomorrow's squad. Pedro Porro is vice-captain, followed in the leadership team by Ben Davies, James Maddison and Archie Gray. Mohammed Kudus is getting close to a return. Dejan Kulusevski has been running on grass, but the wait for his return will be longer, I fear. Xavi and Odobert remain long-term absentees.

Pape Sarr is also not involved tomorrow, but Solanke, Maddison, Udogie and Fernandes are all in the squad for this game.

Tomorrow's starting line-up might not be too different from last Saturday's game against Hoffenheim, which was Kinsky; Gray (c), van Hecke, Senesi, Robertson, Bergvall, Tonali, Gallagher, Moore, Richarlison, Tel.

There is more transfer excitement on the horizon with the signing of Manchester City's Savinho imminent, possibly to be followed by Omar Marmoush.

We surely have good reason for optimism this season, with a stronger squad and less fixtures, due to our absence from the European scene this term.

Coached by Keith Andrews, Brentford had a successful season last year and only just missed out (on goal difference) on a place in Europe, finishing ninth. Rather surprisingly, 36-year-old Jordan Henderson left for Xabi Olonso's Chelsea.

"The Bees'" summer signings include Mali midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens for a club record fee, forward Jaidon Anthony from Burnley, and West Ham's Callum Wilson on a free transfer after the end of his contract with West Ham.

Striker Igor Thiago finished only behind Erlend Haaland in last year's race for the Premier League's golden boot with 22 goals. Thiago scored two of Brentford's seven goals in their last friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt last week. Kevin Schade also scored two. Sangare, Ouattara and Lewis-Potter completed the rout. There's no question about the form of our opponents tomorrow!

That August 2023 match was drawn 2-2. Cristian Romero scored the first of five league goals he hit in that season with an eleventh minute header. Romero had already had treatment after an early clash of heads and was soon replaced as a precaution by Davinson Sanchez.

Mbeumo equalised from the penalty spot and Yoanne Wissa gave "The Bees" a 36th minute lead. Wissa is now at Newcastle and scored Congo's equaliser in their first World Cup match this summer. He followed that with two goals against Uzbekistan to give his country a Round of 32 game against England. Emerson Royal, now playing his football back in Brazil, scored a first half added time equaliser.

When we drew last season's away game on New Year's Day we became the first team to play 137 consecutive games in the Premier League without a goalless draw (previous last was at Brentford on 23 April 2022); previously 114 by Manchester United from May 1999 to May 2002.

Brentford have only won one of the ten Premier League meetings between the two clubs, and have yet to win against Spurs at the Gtech Community Stadium. Their only home win was on 20th March, 1948!

Brentford have won only three of their 26 matches against Tottenham in all competitions.

It's going to be a tough game, but I think we might edge it and win 2-1.

World Cup referee Michael Oliver referees Spurs for the 58th time on Saturday. Mr Oliver refereed our first and last games last season, both of which we won. He first refereed us in January 2011 when we last played Charlton, who we meet in the Carabao Cup next Wednesday. Mr. Oliver is now 41 and had charge of 4 World Cup games this summer. Following the retirement in July of Anthony Taylor, Mr. Oliver has become our longest serving current Premier League referee.

This season, I plan to look back on the events of the 2016-17 season - ten years ago. It was a season in which we finished runners-up - our highest ever Premier League position. We scored more league goals than any other team (including Champions Chelsea), and conceded less than all other teams.

Harry Kane won the Golden Boot with 29 league goals. Dele Alli scored 18, and Son Heung-min added 14. Those three players scored 78 of our 117 in all competitions, which included an ultimately disappointing run in Europe, and a horrible FA Cup semi-final defeat, which was the seventh of eight semi-final exits since we last appeared in the Cup Final and won in 1991.

This was the last season we played at the old White Hart Lane stadium, culminating in the emotional "Finale."

We opened the season at Goodison Park on August 13th with a moderate draw. In our second game, we beat Crystal Palace at home 1-0, thanks to Victor Wanyama.

Finally, a word about Terry Dyson, whose passing was announced yesterday at the age of 91. Terry carved his name in the club's history as a member of the Double winning side and as a scorer of two goals in our 1963 European Cup Winners Cup win over Atletico Madrid. Terry was a very popular figure and remains the only Spur to score a hat-trick against Arsenal (in August 1962). We're saying farewell to a true club legend.
