Why Nuno had to go (Part One)

I will write a more detailed piece later, and while technically the "spursometer" shows a little improvement (believe it or not) for Nuno's last month in charge, it became all too clear in October why Nuno had to go. Daniel Levy reacted quickly after the 3-0 defeat last Saturday at home to Manchester United, discarding Nuno after the fans turned against not only against the former coach, but also the executive.

The confirmation of the appointment of Antonio Conte yesterday (November 2nd) has inspired the fans, and must surely inspire the players.

October began with two league wins. The first was our best performance of the month at home to Villa. The second was over a Newcastle side who are still struggling despite the buoyancy created by the Saudi takeover. In the end the scoreline was not convincing.

Then came the damage to the morale of the squad caused by Nuno's decision to split his squad into a first and second team, leaving eleven players at home who had won at Newcastle and who were clearly going to start at West Ham. The strategy failed, as we lost another Europa Conference game to Vitesse and then the "first team" not only lost at The London Stadium, but failed to score and for most of the game failed even to muster a shot on goal. We did not have one shot on target in the home game against United.

We lost three of our last four games this month. We failed to score a goal in those defeats. We progressed in the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win at Burnley, thanks to Lucas Moura, but even that win was a struggle. We've scored 6 goals this month. Three of those were at Newcastle. One of the six goals was an own goal and no Spurs player this month has scored more than once. Harry Kane scored his one Premier League goal of the season so far at St. James' Park. In 14 appearances so far this season, Kane has scored less than 5 out of 10 on seven occasions. The player and not just his coach has to take the blame for that, but Kane has never endured such a barren spell of form.

Cristian Romero can hold his head high after some fine performances, making him the Spurs Odyssey player of the month for a second consecutive time. Hugo Lloris leads the player ratings, but then he has avoided all but our Premier League games. Even Hugo's overall ratings are moderate.

October, and indeed the season so far is best forgotten. Nuno has gone. Now we must count on Conte.
