And now, the end is near. Will we face the final curtain?

Audere est Facere

So, it has come to this. For the first time in the 34-year history of the Premier League, Spurs face a final day showdown with West Ham to see which team remains in the top flight. We host Everton. They entertain Leeds. The fact of the matter is simple. If West Ham win and we lose, we go down to the Championship. Every other permutation of results leads to our survival.

There have been occasions when we've left it till the penultimate game to secure our Premier League status at Oldham in 1994 and Selhurst Park against Wimbledon in 1998, but we've never left it this late. I've written a couple of times recently about our vital wins in two of the last three games in 1975.

West Ham MUST win. If they lose or draw, we survive, come what may. We only need one point. One single point versus the team from whom we have gained more Premier League points than any other. Look at the stats above. In 67 Premier League games against Everton so far, we have won 121 points at an average of 1.8 points per game. They are our favourite opponents. Their six-game form is worse than ours. They've failed to win. Under Roberto de Zerbi, we've won two of our last six games. We have to win this one, don't we?

Ah, but life and Premier League football is not so simple. After all, we still haven't won a home league game since December 6th. That's ten home games without a win. No home league wins in 2026. We've drawn our last two against Brighton and Leeds and previously managed a draw at home to Manchester City.

This match takes place a full 21 months to the day since we last hosted Everton (in the Premier League). That was the second match of the 24-25 season. When we won 4-0, I said the match could be the easiest game of the season. Sean Dyche was in charge of "The Toffees" at that time.

We lost our last game at Goodison Park in January last year after David Moyes returned to Everton, but in October, Spurs became the first away team to win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. It is a record that will stand forever. In that game, Micky van de Ven became the first recognised defender to score two or more goals in a game in the Premier League for Spurs since Jan Vertonghen at Liverpool on 10 March 2013.

Everton's four Premier League wins at Tottenham were in 2006, 2007, 2008 and finally in September 2020. In that last game played in front of an empty stadium during Covid restrictions, Everton were managed by Carlo Ancelotti, and Spurs by Jose Mourinho. We simply must not allow Everton to conquer us on Sunday (4pm - SKY).

Twelfth-placed Everton have a very slim chance of qualifying for Europe, but I think that would involve Chelsea losing at Sunderland and Everton scoring a lot of goals.

The last time I checked, the odds on being relegated were 1/6 for West Ham and 11/2 for Spurs.

Both clubs have a representative in Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad. Jordan Pickford remains England's number one. Djed Spence has been included.

Everton have had more close calls than us regarding relegation from the Premier League, but famously (apart from Arsenal) have had the longest run in the top flight after promotion in 1954. Remember - Arsenal were never promoted but "elected" in 1919. Spurs' run of 48 seasons in the top division is the longest any team has ever recorded in one of Europe's "big five" top flights without becoming champions in that period.

Since a goalless draw between the two sides in November 2021, we have scored 21 goals against Everton in eight league meetings, averaging 2.625 goals per game.

Everton have been missing Jack Grealish's services since January. Both he and centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite are unavailable. Idrissa Gueye hasn't featured since 4th May, but might be available. Spurs' team news hasn't changed. Dominic Solanke might make the squad. James Maddison is probably not going to start and has played just 28 minutes football this season in our last two games.

We've had many injury absences this season, but none have hurt and hindered us more than the loss of Maddison an Kulusevski, who between them gave us 22 goals and 21 assists in all competitions last season.

I have predicted a 2-0 win for Spurs. It is going to be a difficult day. I hope to see us score two early goals (nothing else would ease my tension) and win survival for ourselves. With the fans of three other Premier League teams in town and possibly on the same train as me, a negative result would be toxic to say the least.

Tommy Wright, who died in January, aged 81, was ever-present in Everton's 1969-70 Championship winning side and won 11 caps for Sir Alf Ramsey's England side. Sir Alf preferred Keith Newton at right back. Newton played for Blackburn until December 1969 when he joined Everton.

Wright was a one-club man, whose career was ended by injury in 1973, having made 374 club appearances. He supported Everton throughout his life and when he was voted into the club's hall of fame in 2016 to thunderous applause, he simply said he was "proud to be an Evertonian" and walked back to his seat.

George Best described Wright as his "most difficult opponent."

It seems as if "The Big Two" referees have been selected for the two most crucial games in this concluding Premier League programme. Michael Oliver is in charge of our game (it will be his 57th Spurs game in the middle. Anthony Taylor is in charge of West Ham v Leeds. A good omen is that Mr. Oliver took charge of our opening day win against Burnley.
