Time to rekindle our away form

Nottingham Forest v Spurs - 26.12.24

Remember that early season away form when we were unbeaten in away league games and won four of our first five such games? That run came to a nasty end at the home of our nearest rivals last month before we grabbed a draw at Newcastle thanks to "Cuti" Romero's goals. It's time to rekindle such form, but Sunday's trip to The City Ground, Nottingham will be tricky, and will have to be played in front of a venomous crowd, unhappy that we tried to sign Morgan Gibbs-White in August.

Gibbs-White continues to excel and has played in all of Forest's Premier League games so far, scoring three goals.

Last season's away game was played on Boxing Day. Nuno's Forest won 1-0 and the goal was scored by Anthony Elanga. Both he and Nuno have left Forest now, and perhaps Elanga's departure to Newcastle was one reason for the rift that developed between Nuno and Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Spurs lost a Premier League game on Boxing Day for the first time since 2003 (2-0 vs Portsmouth), ending their 16-game unbeaten run on 26 December (W12 D4).

Both last season's matches were played on Bank Holidays. The return match on Easter Monday was another unhappy day for Spurs. Forest completed a league double over Spurs for the first time since the 1996-97 campaign.

Nuno's Forest challenged for a Champions League place, but finished seventh. They would have claimed the Europa Conference league spot, but swapped with Palace to play in the Europa League due to Palace's lost appeal against being demoted from the Europa League due to UEFA's rules about club ownership. The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the decision that former director John Textor's links to Lyon were non-compliant with the European body's regulations.

Nuno Espirito Santo signed a three-year deal at the City Ground in June, having guided Forest to seventh in the Premier League last season to qualify for Europe for the first time since 1995-1996.

"I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club," Nuno said.

On 8th September, Nuno was sacked after an apparent rift in relationships between the coach, owner and football director Edu.

Ange Postecoglou was promptly appointed as Nuno's replacement but became the first permanent Nottingham Forest manager for 100 years to fail to win any of his first six games in charge of the club (D2 L4), since John Baynes failed to win any of his first seven games in August/September 1925.

Towards the end of Postecoglou's sixth game - their 3-2 home defeat to Midtjylland - Forest fans were calling for his early sacking. Forest then lost at Newcastle, and just minutes after they lost Postecoglou's eighth game at home to Chelsea (3-0), "Big Ange" was sacked. His 39 day tenure was the shortest permanent (!) reign in Premier League history, and even less than Brian Clough's 44 days at Leeds in the seventies.

The appointment of former Burnley and Everton boss Sean Dyche was confirmed on 21st October - Trafalgar Day.

Dyche certainly put some fight into Forest, who beat Porto 2-0 in his first game. Gibbs-White scored one of those goals, both of which were penalties. Dyche's Forest lost at Bournemouth, but then had a good run of 5 games unbeaten which included a 3-0 win at Anfield!

Forest beat Utrecht away 2-1 in last night's early kick-off and are currently eleventh in the Europa League table. Last month Forest beat Malmo 3-0 in what was a reunion of the 1979 European Cup Final and UEFA Cup meetings in 1995.

Forest have one or two ongoing injury absentees such as Ola Aina, who has impressed at wing-back. He was injured in early September on international duty with Nigeria. Striker Chris Wood is back in training after a knee injury, but apparently not yet match-fit. While not a regular starter these days, Ryan Yates is out with a hamstring injury.

Spurs are in good spirits after two wins, five goals and clean sheets against Brentford and Slavia Prague. With Udogie out till January, the full backs are not likely to change. Brennan Johnson was absent completely from Tuesday night's game, but has been declared fit. I suspect the team will be similar to that on Tuesday, with Bentancur coming in for Palhinha or Archie Gray. It will be a tough game, but I fancy us to sneak a 2-1 win. Here's hoping!

Did you know? - Forest fans adopted Paul McCartney's "Mull of Kintyre" back in the seventies during their 1978 successful Division One title-winning season, and it has become a club anthem (with adapted lyrics) played before every home game.

Sam Barrott (it is the correct spelling) referees Spurs for just the fifth time. His last fixture with us was our 2-2 home draw against Manchester United. Mr Barrott's last visit to The City Ground to officiate was on this date last year, when Nuno's Forest beat Aston Villa 2-1.
