Welcome to N17

By the time we play Sunday's North London Derby (2pm - SKY), 28 Premier League games, two FA Cup semi-finals and five European games involving British teams will have been played since our last match. We've had to mull over our worst defeat of the season at Newcastle, and live with the realisation that an extra Champions League place is almost certainly off the menu following the exits of Arsenal, Liverpool and West Ham from European competition.

Last week we learned that Destiny Udogie will miss the rest of the season due to injury. Spurs confirmed that our left back has undergone surgery to his left quadriceps, having sustained an injury in training. That does not help us to approach Sunday's game with optimism.

Arsenal have played 4 games since we lost 4-0 at Newcastle. The first of these was also a poor result (for us and them) when Aston Villa won 2-0 at The Emirates. That was followed by Champions League exit against a Bayern Munich side which featured both Harry Kane and Eric Dier. They regained the top of the league position with their 2-0 win at Molineux last Saturday, before improving their hold (for this week at least) with a 5-0 thrashing of Chelsea on Tuesday night. This was Arsenal's biggest ever win over Chelsea.

We now have to play our remaining 6 games in the last three weeks of the season. Three of our opponents are the Premier League title contenders. I was hoping that Arsenal might be feeling the strain after their exertions of the last two weeks, but I fear that will not be the case on Sunday. Our opponents have scored 45 goals in the 14 Premier League games they have played so far in 2024.

Happy memories come to mind, of course, regarding our 3-0 win over Arsenal in May two years ago. Mikel Arteta's team had come to Tottenham in fourth place, four points above us, and were favourites to beat us in the race for Champions League football. Antonio Conte's men won the day and would conclude a wonderful end of season run in the cherished fourth place after Arsenal bottled an away trip to Newcastle. Our win was Spurs' 500th Premier League win.

Arteta the player appeared more times for Everton than he did for Arsenal, and of course served a good apprenticeship under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City before taking the helm down the road in December 2019.

Arsenal have beaten us away 6 times in 31 Premier League games. The last of these wins came last January, after which our nemesis took an eight-point lead over City at the top of the league. City prevailed, and finished five points above Arsenal, beating them comfortably away and at home. City remain favourites to overcome Arsenal and to win a fourth consecutive League title. That's something never before achieved in English football.

Heung-min Son's two goals in this season's away game took his club total to 150. Son is the first Spurs player to score two goals in a league game away to Arsenal since John Hendry in May 1993. "Sonny" has now scored 160 club goals and is our fifth highest goalscorer.

Spurs scored at least two goals in each of their first six league games this season for the first time since 1965-66 and 1960-61. Postecoglou is only the fourth Premier League manager whose side have scored at least two goals a game in their first half-dozen matches. The other three are Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola and Craig Shakespeare. We extended our record to seven games when we beat Liverpool 2-1 last September.

In one game last September Ange Postecoglou won more points away at Arsenal than his three predecessors, Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, picked up between them. Our previous league draw at The Emirates was in September 2019 when we went two-up thanks to Christian Eriksen and a Harry Kane penalty, before the home side replied through Lacazette and Aubameyang.

In last September's 2-2 draw Cristian Romero was the 11th player in Premier League history to score an own goal and give away a penalty in the same game, and the first Spurs player to do so.

When he scored his first goal in Arsenal's 6-0 win at West Ham in February, 22-year-old Bukayo Saka became the youngest player to score 50 goals for the club since Frank Stapleton in 1978. With Pat Jennings in the Arsenal goal, in our first season back in the top flight after a one-year sojourn, Stapleton scored in both home and away wins against Spurs in 1978/79. The White Hart Lane meeting was the notorious 5-0 which was run by Liam "Chippy" Brady on December 23rd.

Spurs have now failed to score in two of their last 44 games in the Premier League. These were the awful defeats away to Fulham and Newcastle. We have also conceded four goals in three of our 32 games so far in this Premier League season. These were Chelsea (H), Brighton (A) and Newcastle (A).

Ange Postecoglou says that both Pedro Porro and Richarlson trained well this week, so will be available. The big question is who plays in Udogie's place. Could we see three at the back (Dragusin, Romero, Van de Ven) which might provide some cover for a slower left back such as Ben Davies. The best I can truly hope for is a draw, but we need Spurs to just give it everything!

Michael Oliver will be refereeing his 50th Spurs game and his seventh North London Derby. Previously we have won two, drawn two, and lost two of those games. Last week, Mr Oliver had charge of the Man City - Chelsea semi-final. He continues to officiate in European and International games.

Did you know? - Arsenal's "Invincibles" who won the last of their three Premier League titles in 2003-04 without losing any of their 38 league games, lost six games in other competitions. These consisted of three Champions League defeats, ending with a quarter-final defeat to Chelsea, defeats to Middlesbrough in both legs of the League Cup semi-final, and FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United.

The 20 year gap since that league title win is longest gap between titles since their first win in 1931. They have won 13 titles in all, including three in Premier League.
