Into Wolves' den of doom
Thanks to Cassim Patel for this picture
Spurs travel to Molineux to visit doomed Wolves' den, seeking a first league win of 2026 in their quest for Premier League survival. Wolves' relegation was confirmed on Monday night after West Ham's draw at Crystal Palace. Thus ends Wolves' current eight-season stay in the top flight. That draw for "The Hammers" gave Spurs hope that they can survive the same fate as our hosts for this 3pm Saturday game. A win tomorrow is surely imperative with games running out.
Despite spending the whole season in the bottom three, and not managing a league win until January (in their 20th game), Wolves form in this calendar year has been better than that of Spurs, as they have won three games, including recent home wins over Aston Villa and Liverpool. No doubt, Rob Edwards' side will play against us with freedom and a determination to gather as many points as they can.
This is Wolves' third relegation from the Premier League since they first played at this level in 2003-04. We played at Molineux and won 2-0 on the last day of that season when former Wolves player Robbie Keane added to his old team's agony by scoring one of our goals. Wolves' relegation then had been confirmed with two games left to play.
As one of the 12 founding members of The Football League in 1888, three League titles in the 1950s and four FA Cup wins, Wolves have a proud history.
"Doctor Tottenham" gave Wolves their first league point of this season in our home game at the end of September. Wolves drew their next game at home to Brighton, then had to wait until 30th December for their next point - at Old Trafford. In their next (20th) Premier League game of the season, Wolves beat West Ham 3-0, thus gaining their first league win of the season, and in 24 league games since April 2025.
Until the win against "The Hammers", Wolves' only wins had been Carabao Cup victories over West Ham (3-2) and Everton (2-0). Spurs were grateful for a 94th minute equaliser by Joao Palhinha for their home draw in September.
On 2nd November Vitor Pereira (now succeeding as Forest's fourth manager of this season) was sacked after failing to win any of their 10 Premier League games this season. A 3-0 defeat at Fulham was the last straw. At that stage, one of Wolves' only two points had been gained at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Pereira had only been given a new deal 45 days before his dismissal.
With that defeat, Wolves became the first team in Premier League history to have successive seasons without a win in their first ten games. In 2024-25, they managed their first win in the eleventh game at home to Southampton.
On 12th November, Wolves announced the appointment of former Middlesbrough and Luton coach Rob Edwards. Edwards, who was born on Christmas Day 1982 in Telford was a Wolves player between 2004 and 2008 and also served Wolves as a coach before embarking on his managerial career with Forest Green, Watford, Luton then Middlesbrough who were second in the Championship at the time of his move. Wolves were rock bottom with two points at the time of his appointment.
Towards the end of last season, led by Pereira, Wolves had a run of six successive wins which included their 4-2 win over Tottenham. Jorgen Strand Larsen scored 6 goals in that sequence, one of which was Wolves' third goal against Spurs. Strand Larsen now plays for Crystal Palace.
The last time Wolves had scored four goals against Spurs in a match was 1957 when Wolves were a top team.
Spurs have lost four of their last six league meetings with Wolves (D2) since a 1-0 victory in August 2022. Wolves have only lost two of their last nine Premier League visits to Tottenham Hotspur (W4 D3), avoiding defeat in their most recent three (W1 D2). For the first time Spurs have gone six consecutive league games against Wolves without a win.
Spurs are now without a win in their first 15 league games at the start of a year for the first time since 1935 in League Division One (15). We have now become the first team to remain without a win in their first 15 games of a year in the Premier League since Derby County in 2008 (18).
On deadline day in February Wolves sealed the signings of England midfielder Angel Gomes from Marseille and striker Adam Armstrong from Southampton. The Wolves squad now includes four players by the name of Gomes - Angel Gomes, Joao Gomes, Rodrigo Gomes and Toti Gomes.
Forest play at Sunderland tonight and a win would put them eight points above Spurs. The fight for Premier League survival could be between us and West Ham. We really do need that first league win of the year tomorrow. I'm saying we will win 2-0!
Our match referee is one of the most experienced officials around - Anthony Taylor. Now 47, Mr Taylor first refereed Spurs in December 2010. Described as an Altrincham fan from Wythenshaw, Mr. Taylor referees both Manchester teams. He was in charge of September's Manchester Derby and last week's win by City over Arsenal. With Michael Oliver, Mr. Taylor has again been named by FIFA among this summer's World Cup officials. Mr. Taylor was in charge last April when Wolves beat us 4-2.
Did you know? (1) - Wolves entered December without any player reaching 2 league goals this season. The last top-flight team to do that were Leicester in 1977, who were relegated in bottom place in Division One, along with Newcastle and West Ham. They now have two players (Arokodare and Rodrigo Gomes) with three league goals apiece.
Did you know? (2) - In 24-25 Luton were just the fourth Premier League side to be relegated in successive seasons after Swindon (95-96), Wolves (2012-13), and Sunderland in 2017-18. Leicester joined that group this week, after failing to beat Hull.
Did you know? (3) - Ricky Villa scored Spurs' last goal in their 3-0 win over Wolves in the 1981 FA Cup semi-final replay (played at Highbury) and hit his only Spurs hat-trick in a 6-1 win at home to the same opponents the following season? (This is FA Cup semi-final weekend)
